I wonder how many of you worry, or know someone who constantly does. I wonder if many of you realise the implication and the “subtext” of worrying. Because in truth, I found it a little difficult to realise on my own.
Looking Matthew 6:31;
"So do not worry, saying, "What shall we eat?" or "What shall we drink?" or "What shall we wear?"
When Jesus came down into our world, there is no doubt that He must have been amazed and astonished at how anxious and worried His people are. Surely it must have struck him as unreasonable and silly to worry when we have such a powerful and loving Father.
Looking at the Sermon on the Mount- it is the constitution of the kingdom of heaven, and it is very clear that this kingdom has no space for anxiety and worry.
Looking at Matthew 6:25;
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothes?"
What do you think these Words spoken by Jesus Himself imply?
To me it seems that many of us must be missing the very point of life. The beauty behind it. The blessing it is. Life is a beautiful opportunity from God to help Him carry out His will. It is far to beautiful to waste on mere passing anxieties of the day.
Looking at Matthew 6:26-30;
"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow nor reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? And why do you worry about your clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labour or spin. Yet I tell you not even Solomon in all his splendour was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you- o, you of little faith?"
One beautiful way this was explained to me is this;
The Christian is not an orphan in an unfriendly universe. We are the children of the maker of the very universe. He is the one who makes and looks after everything. He is the one that clothes the flowers. In effect the above verses are saying; "If this is what the Christian's Father does for flowers and animals, will He not do much more for His own children?" It is now very hard to argue against this, and makes worrying and anxiety look foolish and obsolete.
Humans for the longest time have imagined invisible spirits working on us- both good and bad. The spirit of worrying just patiently waiting for us to lose trust in our God to mark our faces with lines representing his victory. I read somewhere once- the human face is self recording, and all the struggle is the record which is brought onto the surface of the face.
I began thinking to myself- oh what a shame! That God has made such a beautiful face and the spirit of worry wants to defy it with lines of worry and markers of stress.
Worrying is for no good. It neither fixes anything nor gives you more time to fix it. Just look at what Jesus Himself said in Matthew 6:27;
"Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?"
Imagine in all of human history. All those people that worried and were anxious about unnecessary things. Just let it sink in how useless that was. All those burdened souls, the tired eyes, destroyed health and happiness- worrying never led to anything good.
I praise the Lord that He has helped me overcome my worries and anxieties. I still struggle, but not for long. I am quick to dismiss these worries as obsolete and funny really, because now I understand how merciful and loving our Father is. I have a better understanding of His Word and Promises, and this led me to worrying minimally.
I pray that Father God, intercepts the path of the spirit of worry in all your lives. May He powerfully show all of You, who read this how loved you are and what a beautiful creation with a purpose (that is most certainly not worrying) you are.
Amen
All Blessings,
Michael
